I have them on different computers but I had no difficulty opening a simple 2008 est or stt file with S&T 2007. I included several push pins and the result was fine.

Terry, it might have been the other way around, though. Newer Streets & Trips version can open a file saved in an older S&T version, but an older S&T cannot open files saved by a newer version . This is an often mentioned user complaint.

Thanks for the Welcome. MS solution was to run both programs (2007 & 2008) on the same computer. If that's the case then why upgrade.

Marvin,
I thought that was resolved some time ago. However I do have several versions of S&T on various computers. I will try opening this file on an older version.

I tried this file with S&T 2004 and 2005 and neither could open it. I resaved it in S&T 2007 but still could not open it with 2004 or 2005.

This leads me to believe tclibety's friends don't have s&T 2007 but older versions. As saving in 2007 does not resolve the problem, I can't see the point of Microsoft's suggestion.

Am I off in left field here?

My friends have 2007, because I installed it on their computers. I went ahead and bought 2008 (like a dummy) to get the lastest version. Now I whish I would of stayed with 2007.

Yeah, either you downgrade to version 2007, or your two friends upgrade to version 2008. Or, to follow Microsoft's suggested work-around, you could install Streets and Trips 2007 (along with your existing S&T 2008), and then do the trip planning in S&T 2007. Share the S&T 2007 files with friends, and then open the S&T 2007 file in your S&T 2008 when you are ready to drive.

Terry, it has been a wish of many users that this be addressed, but it is still the way it is .

Marvin,
I am obviously missing something here. I create a simple map with some push pins in S&T 2008 on my Toshiba. I save it to the r2h UMPC. I open S&T 2007 on the r2h and open the file I created in S&T 2008. I don't get any warning messages or other problems.

Do I need something more complex to see the problems you are mentioning? I'll have to admit that, since I just put 2008 on my laptop, it doesn't have any routes or locations saved with it.

Terry, that's odd. It is not supposed to work, LOL!

If you don't mind, as you've already suggested, perhaps the file needs to be a bit more complex - try creating a route from A to B, and test it again. (I would test it myself, but I don't have version 2007 installed on my mobile PC anymore.)

I opened a complex map from S&T 2004 and resaved as a 2008 file. I could not open this with S&T 2007.

I guess my first try was too simple.

You might be interested though, that if I only delete the route from this file and leave the 71 pushpins, it opens fine in 2007. So the route is the problem.

Terry, this is a very interesting observation. I though no file saved in a newer version was ever openable in an older version. But you found otherwise. Now I wonder (and I should test this when I get the time), what specifically prevents file compatibility - is it only routes? If it's only routes, then perhaps a file saved with only stops entered to Route Planner - but w/out routes plotted, could still keep the files compatible between versions.

I just tried a quick test of that with 6 stops but no route. Unfortunately it would not open in 2007.

Makes sense. If the version differences are in the route database and you include any data, no matter how little, that causes the route database to be included in the saved file, you're dead.
