Need to: 'Deploy MS Streets & Trips over a network'

Hi everyone - Just joined your forum today. Hope somebody can help with a problem I have with Microsoft Streets and Trips. I purchased a mini computer to run MS S&T in my relatively small car (my wife got tired of holding the big laptop on her lap). The mini computer does not have a dvd/cd rom drive for installing software. I was told by the sales person that the software could be copied to a USB portable hard drive and then loaded onto the mini computer from there. That method worked fine for MS Word and Exel. However - when I tried to do the same thing with MS S&T 2006 it came up with the message that I first need to do an administrative installation. It also said to see the help page on "Deploy MS Streets & Trips over a network". The explanation was also supposed to be in the Readme file on the CD. For all my efforts and searches I can not find any information on how to do an "administrative installation" or "Deploy MS S&T over a network".

I did find an article on how to do an administrative installation for MapPoint which apparently has a .msi extension. MS S&T 2006 does not.

If anyone has any information on either of these two subjects I would be glad to hear from you.

Rather than considering 'deploying over a network', share a DVD drive from another computer over your network and do the S&T install from there.

...or just download Streets & Trips from microsoft.com/streets - the 60-day trial version is the identical software that you bought. The only difference is that your purchased product includes an activation code.

That would be my preferred method of installing it. If you have a fast Internet connection, and if you are not going to pay extra money to your Internet Service Provider for downloading such large file (around 2 GB I'm guessing), then this way you will avoid having to set up any network, etc.

Marvin - Are you referring to the 2009 trial version?
If yes - I did download it - they are not exactly identical - They are not backward compatible RE: pushpin issue.
I don't see where I can download the 2006 version from Microsofts web site. 2006 did not have an activation code.

Terry - sounds like that might work. The only problem I have at this time is my network (which is not set up) is in AZ - I'm currently on a trip in WI and won't be home for two more months. Retirement is great!

Yes, sorry, I just re-read your posting and I see that you want to install your 2006 version.

I don't seem to have 2006 DVD. 2007 has a file called Setup_ST.exe which, I suppose would install the program. If you are not the administrator, did you try right clicking on that file and choosing 'Run As'. As you are discussing a mini notebook, I am assuming it is running XP.

Terry - Just tried your 'Run As' idea. I still get the same message. Yes - I'm running Windows XP.

I'm confused! You went on a trip with a new computer and didn't already have S&T installed but have the CDs (DVD) with you? Do you have your other computer? Networking the 2 is no big deal and your other laptop probably has a DVD drive.

Terry - I started this trip from AZ with Streets & Trips 2006 which is installed on a desktop computer in the motorhome and also on a (large) laptop computer. My wife and I did a spur trip in WI using the laptop computer in our car (which I pulled along with us on this trip). She had to hold the laptop on her lap (I think that's why they call it a laptop!) because there is no place esle in the front seat to put it. We stopped at a Wal-Mart on the way home from our little spur trip and I showed her the mini computer. In less than a millisecond she said - GET IT!. So I got it. I'm always open to new toys. That's when I tried to install V2006 on the mini computer via a portable USB hard drive. At this time I have V2006 on the desktop and large laptop computers and I carry a set of original CD's for all of the programs installed on these two computers.

Both the desktop and the large laptop have DVD drives in them. I was under the impression that you needed a HUB in order to network computers together. I read that in some instructions somewhere. The HUB provides the necessary crossover from output to input for data transfer. I don't have a HUB and this problem isn't worth the $50 to buy one.

I have downloaded Streets and Trips 2009 via the internet onto the mini computer. That worked just fine except my V2006 trip plans do not transfer (convert) correctly due to the infamous pushpin issue. I have copied some of the old pushpins but the V2006 trip plans still don't convert correctly.

My biggest loss is going to be a base (Populated.est) plan that over the years I have populated with Wal-Mart Supercenter (small yellow dots), Wal-Mart Supercenters with gas (small red dots), locations for family members (houses), RV friendly gas stations like truck stops (different colored small squares), and all the locations for three different membership campgrounds (small different colored triangles). Without the pushpins converting correctly I'd have to start this all over again. Hope this clears things up a bit.

By the way: I downloaded the S&T Hotkeys for V2009. That is the greatest add-on I have ever seen.

MohawkAZ, here is a discussion thread that may be of interest to you: [Template] Old-style pushpins for Streets & Trips 2009 / MapPoint 2009 - it may be helpful if you read it to the end (a couple of last posts at page #2 and a couple of first posts at page #3 may help, too).

Marvin - I did read all of the articles regarding the loading of the old V2006 pushpins and I did download the template which includes all of the V2006 pushpins. The problem still remains that V2009 will not convert a V2006 map with the correct pushpins. It converts with large V2009 pushpins (of its own choosing).

If I create a 'new' map or trip plan using V2009 with the downloaded template - yes - all of the old V2006 pushpins are available. I just can't use my V2006 'Populated.est' map as a starting point.

My work around for now is:
I have V2006 and V2009 installed on my desktop computer.
I will use V2006 on my desktop to create the major trip plans - thus being able to continue using my Populated.est base map.
I will use V2009 on my desktop to create new shorter side trips - which is easier to do with a full size keyboard and mouse. These short side trips will then be transferred to the mini computer running V2009 via a USB flashdrive.

I'm not opposed to using V2009 for short side trips since it has a better night screen than did V2006.

I believe on page #2 of the above mentioned thread, the posting #30 contains a link that may help.

Alternatively, you could just import the needed few pushpin symbols into Streets & Trips 2009.

Marvin - You're missing the point. I can get the pushpins loaded in V2009. It's trying to convert a V2006 map with many hundred pushpins on it that does not convert correctly to a 2009 version.

I did not download the program from the other web site because I would have to join that one too. As I understand it - that program does esentially the same thing as replacing the template - it makes all of the V2006 pushpins available for 'new' V2009 trips. It does not cause or make V2009 to convert a V2006 map correctly - unless you can tell me positively otherwise - !

A little bit off your subject. How do you like using S&T 2009 on your little computor I was thinking of going this route in the future. Any dislikes or negatives from using this type of mini screen? Is 1 gig of ram enough S&T? Thanks for any reply. Rukstr
