It is possible (probable) that, although you can transfer waypoint, track and map data to/ from the Nuvi and MapSource, it does not provide real time GPS data to the computer. Also, but less important, Streets & Trips works with COM ports only while the Nuvi does not provide a USB to COM driver.

re: Review: Microsoft Streets and Trips

Hi Mike,

There are a number of possibilities.

1. Not all Nuvis send the GPS signal through the USB port to the PC. On many Nuvi models the USB connection is only used to transfer waypoints, tracks, routes and maps between the Nuvi and Mapsource.

Are you sure your model sends the GPS signal out the USB port to the PC?

2. Whether your Nuvi sends the GPS signal or not, Streets won't do anything with it anyway. Streets has no clue how to connect to the USB port. The only thing it can connect to is a COM port and only at 4800bps. There is no other way to connect a GPS receiver to it.

The only way you can connect your Nuvi is using GPSGate. It will detect the GPS receiver on the USB port and it will create virtual COM ports to output the signal at any speed you set it to. That way you can make Streets happy by setting one of the virtual COM ports in GPSGate to 4800bps and pointing Streets at it in the Configure GPS page.

GPSGate is not free but there is a free 14-day trial so you can find out if it will work for you before you have to decide whether to buy it. And it's only about 13 bucks (GPSGate Express) if you decide to buy it.

EDIT: Okay, it occurs to me someone's going to suggest Xport or Spanner so I might as well deal with it myself.

Xport won't work for this. It won't accept input from either USB or Bluetooth directly, only COM ports.

Spanner might work but it's old and I don't think there are many Nuvi models it will work with, if any. The odds are slim.

GPSGate is guaranteed to work for this purpose if the Nuvi model Mike has outputs the GPS signal.

PS. Oops, I didn't see Terry's answer before I entered this. I hope I added enough value to leave this here.

Ken:

Thanks for the info. I appreciate it because I learn something every time one of you guys answer me.

I really don't need to transfer from S&T to my Garmin. I just wanted to see if I could. I usually plan a trip on Streets, then do the same with MapSource using the info from Streets and transfer the waypoints & trips to the GPS.

Thanks again for your time.

Regards,

Mike,
That is a different issue. Although using a Nuvi as a GPS receiver for S&T is difficult to impossible, you supposedly can transfer the waypoints of a trip planned in S&T 2010 to your Nuvi.

Sorry Mike. I thought you wanted to use your Nuvi as a GPS receiver for Streets. Oops.

As Terry said, you should be able to transfer the stops directly to your Nuvi.

You have to have an internet connection to do it because Streets actually uses a function from MSN Direct (or something like that).

CANADA

Microsoft Canada will, on October 12, 2009, release Streets & Trips 2010.

Surprisingly, I still cannot find a single online retailer in the U.S. who sells (or takes pre-orders) of the version with GPS.

That's right Terry - I love this feature in 2010. Jim and Chris Guld (aka Geeks on Tour) recently posted an article and demonstration video showing 1 of the 3 ways Streets & Trips 2010 allows you to transfer data to your Garmin: http://blog.rv.net/2009/09/streets-and-trips-2010/.

1. via MSN Direct
2. via USB (shown in video)
3. Export to GPX then copy GPX file over to the GPX folder on the Nuvi.

As you can see, if you are using the old version of S&T 2008-2009 as compared to the new version 2010, you will travel extra km (an hour extra maybe blue road), when there is a much better route taking highway 40 (green road in 2010 version) .

I have restarted computer with unit plugged in and tried several times with the same pop up "No GPS receiver detected". I opened Map Source and transferred to the GPS successfully. Does anyone have any idea as to why I can't get Microsoft Streets and Trips 2010 to recognize my GPS?
Thanks,

Hi,

You may transfer a GPX file to your Garmin...

I have a Garmin Nuvï 750 and a Garmin GPS 20x, both don't work with Microsoft Streets and Trips, the 20x work with Garmin Mobil PC only.

I use a Deluo with S&T...
