S&T uses "Pushpins" for that. Take a look at the Help menu.

Boy, do I need help. i cannot use F7 to mute voice, sometimes voice gives directions as driving other times I have to use the space bar to hear instructions. What in the world could be wrong?

This feature is unfriendly to user. Perhaps something should be done to make it more intuitive. It is unclear to users when S&T is muted, and when it is not muted.

If you only hear voice instructions when you press the space bar, the program is muted. Press F7 to un-mute (you have to "navigate" for the F7 to work).

Re: Review: Microsoft Streets and Trips

The GPS18 USB puts out a proprietary Garmin data signal which does not work with S&T. If you are using Windows XP, Garmin offers a free program to convert the output called Spanner.
Garmin: Spanner Updates & Downloads
If you are using Windows Vista, Spanner will not work. You can use an inexpensive program from Franson, GPS GATE Express. It is available as a time limited trial.

Is it possible to add comments to the Route Planner such as Hotel name, Phone number, Address, etc.?

Hi chgi,

to Laptop GPS World.

This was not possible in earlier versions, but starting in Streets and Trips 2010 we may right-click any entry in the Route Planner, and then select "Rename".

True, but I wonder what the limits are in terms of number of characters.

I put in 150 characters and spaces in a renamed Stop before I gave up. It accepted all but it showed only the first 30 or so characters in the Driving Directions panel. However, it did show it all in the pop-up for the Stop on the map and the full length was there when I printed the Driving Directions. I have not tried to see what happens in the Navigation Pane; Microsoft Annie, or whatever her name is, might go on strike rather than read all of that. Inserting some spaces at logical places allows the text processor to roll the text into a new line for conventional text formatting in the printed Driving Directions.

And, of course, there are always Pushpins.

So, it seems that a reasonable amount of the data you might want to insert via Rename will be handled just fine.

Easier is to use a pushpin for this. You can add all this information in the pushpin, and you can also add internet url to a web site or a file on your computer (see the tips section for this) that can have a lot of informations if really needed. And the pushpin set can be saved, the pushpin can be made visible or not. You can also travel easily from pushpin to pushpin by using the tab or shift tab key (let say you only have a dozen of them). Pushpin can be used for the route (start stop or end points) or can just appear on the map as manageable comments. Pushpin can come also from excel sheets that can help manage your information if it could be tabulated...

It depends on what you are trying to achieve. If you have no interest in preserving the Stop information (which Pushpins does very well) for future use and you just need the information associated with the Stop for one single use, then entering it via Rename might be better. Also, if you are only concerned about having the Stop info in the Directions, then Rename involves fewer steps, avoiding getting into Pushpins at all.

For instance, if you are creating a set of driving instructions to be sent to someone else not using S&T with Stops that you have no need of memorializing in your Pushpins, it might be easier to just Rename the Stops as you can now do in S&T2010.

The nice thing is that 2010 now gives users this choice: Pushpins or Rename Stops, whichever is best under the circumstances.

Re: Review: Microsoft Streets and Trips

I will attempt to find out from Microsoft Canada the ETA on the product in Canada, but I don't guarantee I will get the info, as they tend to make their own announcements of new S&T releases via their press releases. But I realize that for some people the 60-day trial is expiring and they need it urgently. You could try to purchase it right here, and let us know if Canadians can get it, too.

If I find out any info from Microsoft Canada, I will post it here tomorrow.
