Auto-input of addresses in Microsoft Streets and Trips

Hi everyone here. Just found this forum today and have a question regarding Microsoft Streets and Trips 2009.

I have a business inspecting houses and get a decent volume of houses. My problem is that I do get the same houses at least twice a month and when I do I have to input in routing box sometimes the address is finished for me when I start inputing sometimes it doesn't. Would like to have it finish for me all the time when it is an old address as this will save time when inputing large over 30+ address into new route. In central Florida and also out in boonies so how do I upgrade maps?

I input the same addresses every month and would like to find a way that Streets & Trips 2009 can have these addresses stored so that when I start typing them in the program will finish the address for me and save me some time.

One alternative is to use S&T Keys 2009 <F8> functions (see link in my signature). You can enter a list of pre defined address that can be used by clicking on it with your mouse.

Another alternative is to use an excel sheet to enter the list of address and import them in S&T as a pushpin set. You can then click on one of these pushpins and add it as a route point.

S&T will also remember some addresses you typed in the find box...

This is too easy and I haven't answered because I probably don't understand what you are asking for.

Here's what I did. I typed in an address and when it was found I clicked Okay and it became a pushpin in My Pushpins.

I did that for a few more addresses.

I saved the map with the pushpins in it.

I exited Streets&Trips and then ran it again. I opened the map file I just saved with those addresses in My Pushpins.

Now .... whenever I start to type into the search bar one of the addresses that I previously found, after a couple of characters the search box drops down with the matching address shown. That means it's already been found and is in My Pushpins.

If I type in a new address that I have not already looked for, there is no dropdown.

Is that sort of what you were looking for? (This was using Streets&Trips 2010 but it should work that way in other recent versions, I think.)

ok i get the same thing but it does not do this after a couple of days. I make a different route everyday of anywhere from 20 -50 addresses is there anyway to increase the amount of addresses in memory or to save addresses already used for a different route. I do save all my routes if that helps.

re: Auto-input of addresses in Streets & Trips

This is an interesting question, Boomer. The best solution, it seems to me, is to convert Route Stops to Pushpins. Unfortunately, that is not as easy as it should be. Some time ago, I added this to the wishlist for future S&T features.

However, there is a possible workaround in S&T 2010 that I do not think would not be doable in earlier versions. It involves the new capability to rename Route Stops.

As you probably know, there are two ways of looking up an address: in the search feature of the Advanced Toolbar; and in the search box of Route Planner. The difference between the two is that the former will automatically create a Pushpin when you accept the search findings whereas the Route Planner will not. It will just put the address into the route. So, to create Pushpins you must get the addresses (one at a time, unfortunately) into the Toolbar search window.

The way to do that with pre-existing route files is to open the old route in S&T 2010 and then, one by one, select the Stops, right-click to get to the Rename function, click [Alt-C] to copy the highlighted address in the Rename box, go to the Advanced Toolbar search box and click [Alt-V] to paste the address into the box. Then, accept the search and a Pushpin will be created and the map focus will be moved to its location. Note that you can then rename the Pushpin to something like the client name or something else useful.

That new Pushpin will now be in your "My Pushpins" set and you may want to create new sets and re-organize the sets and the Pushpins to your needs. Obviously, you will want to save this. But once you have done this conversion and saved the Pushpins, you will have them "forever." Once you have your target Stops converted to Pushpins you will have a great deal of routing flexibility.

I hope this is of some help to you.

Thanks, I did that in S&T 2009, but now I cannot add new pushpin to a data set because of limitations in Street and Trips. I guess Gates wants me to buy MapPoint.

Is a pushpin similar to a waypoint in a handheld or dedicated GPS?

Well, not exactly. It is potentially similar to a waypoint in that you can have thousands of pushpins on your map that are not on your route so they are not waypoints. You have to add a pushpin to your route for it to be a waypoint.

re: Auto-input of addresses in Streets & Trips

Waypoints do not have to be part of a route. I have hundreds of waypoints stored in Garmin's Mapsource and on my Garmin iQue 3600 and they are just like pushpins. In the iQue they have names and addresses and phone numbers and email addresses and web links. I can choose to use them in routes or not, just like pushpins in Streets&Trips.

If you export the pushpins (not a route) to a GPX file from Streets&Trips they will be entered in the GPX file as <waypt> which is the symbol for waypoint.

I take what you say, Ken, but personally I think Garmin misuses the word "waypoint" thereby creating confusion. I would think strict semantics would not call a point a "waypoint" if it is not on a route. See Waypoint | Definition of Waypoint at Dictionary.com:.

Boomer, it doesn't really matter how many sets you have on the map. Every time you get a new order, punch them into the same map. The old ones should come up as you type them in, and the new ones won't, so switch back to advanced tool bar, add the push pin, then add it to your route. It should come up in a new set. After you save your route for the day you are working, clear it and save the master map with the new set of pins.

As an aside, if you want to go back through your old maps, if they were pinned, you can copy and paste whole sets by right clicking on the pin set in the Legend and Overview window.

Unfortunately SpadesFlush Garmin seems to have coined the term waypoint and it has caught on. Talk to most anyone who uses a GPS and a waypoint means simply a saved location.
