Missing menu bar in Microsoft Streets and Trips

Good morning. New member here.

I own Microsoft Streets and Trips 2007, testing 2008....same issue between the two:

I cannot find help with getting my menu bar to reappear. I accidently hid the menu bar (the long bar of menu options just under the long blue title bar at the top of the window).

The help section in S&T says to press F10 to access the menu, but that doesn't work either. All the other built in keyboard shortcuts work (Ctrl + key)

Is there a way to force S&T back to default views?

Thanks and I look forward to using this forum in the future. I take my S&T with me when we go R'V'ing so I'll be around.

Hi Hardwood. It's not your fault, you didn't accidentally hide the Menu bar. Streets & Trips 2007 and 2008 have this issue. I don't know what causes it, but I do know how to bring back the Menu bar.

First download S&T Keys. When you are going to download it, please don't click "Run", but rather click "Save". Save it to your desktop (or another location of your choice). Then "Run" it from there by clicking twice on it.

Make sure Streets & Trips is closed. Then run S&T Keys to start Streets & Trips. When S&T Keys starts your Streets & Trips, the Menu bar should reappear.

P.S. It's the F1-key (not F10) that opens S&T Keys menu. It's just a pop-up window that lists available shortcuts.

If I missed something, let me know.

Re: Missing menu bar in Microsoft Streets and Trips

LOL, I knew sooner or later someone would want to hide it

Regedit:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Automap\15.0\ ToolBars-Bar0

if you want to hide the menu bar: "Visible", "REG_DWORD", "1"

or if you want to unhide it: "Visible", "REG_DWORD", "0"

I'm not sure if there really is any practical reason for hiding it. You'll gain a little bit of map space, yes . Have fun.

Ben, I should have mentioned, just for the record, that you have to do the above registry change before you start Streets & Trips. You will see the change in the application the next time you start it.

I was hinting about a reg tweak to make the navigation screen a little thinner,
That giant black bar eats a lot of screen area.

or changing the red arrow to a custom bitmap: just cool stuff you may know about and are willing to share.

I had that problem but now I am having a black square at the top left of my screen whenever Streets & Trips is open.

Hi cdoo,

to Laptop GPS World.

When on the road, and connected to GPS, try to switch to full-screen navigation mode. Hopefully, when you exit the full-screen navigation mode, the "black square at the top left" will be gone.

Re: Missing menu bar in Microsoft Streets and Trips

Switching Streets & Trips into full-screen mode is quite intuitive if you are doing it in the car, but it may cause a bit of a confusion if you are attempting to do it at home in your living room.

Unless you have a GPS receiver connected, a 3D fix acquired, and a route plotted, Microsoft Streets and Trips will not switch to full screen mode.

I don't think you actually need to have acquired a 3D satellite fix; it seems for me that I can get full screen mode but you do need to have (a) a route active, (b) a GPS receiver active, (c) have selected Start GPS Tracking, (d) have selected Provide Driving Guidance, (e) having accepting legal responsibility on the Safety Warning for using the Guidance while driving, and (f) selecting View->Full Screen Map Mode (F11).

It would be nice if this were simplified in subsequent offerings of S&T.

Re: Missing menu bar in Microsoft Streets and Trips

Sorry for resurrecting this old thread, but every other thread related to "missing menu bar" (or similar) points back to this one! I'm running 2009 and the menu bar disappeared and I got the black square after the laptop ran out of battery power while in use.

The registry value for "ToolBars-Bar0" is set to 0 under both "HKEY_USERS" and "HKEY_CURRENT_USER", so that's not the issue in this case

On my version F1 brings up help, which says (press) F10 (to) "Activate the main menu bar." F10 isn't doing anything whatsoever.

Thanks in advance for helping me get this fixed!

Re: Missing menu bar in Microsoft Streets and Trips

Shawn, if you have Streets & Trips version 2009, you would need to check:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Automap\16.0\ ToolBars-Bar0

15 = version 2008
16 = version 2009
17 = version 2010

The above procedure should work. Re-installing Streets & Trips should work, too.

(The F1 comment was in the reference to S&T Keys (not S&T itself). If you are not running S&T Keys, please ignore that part.)
