Default Losing my Comm Port

Hey Guys and gals,

Any ideas here. Using Microsoft Streets and Trips 2008 on a Dell Inspiron. Im losing communication between the computer and the receiver/antenna. Doesnt seem to matter if the vehicle is in motion or not. The Microsoft receiver always stays lit up (blue). Will lose tracking, will configure receiver and computer cannot find it. Unplug reciever and plug it back in, scan again and it is located and away we go. Sometimes have to restart S & T before it will be located.

I have checked into my device manager and believe I have all the settings correct. 4800 bits....etc

I wonder if it could be a result of some conflict w/another USB device. If you have some other USB peripheral connected to your laptop, try to disconnect it.

Thanks Marv, Already been there and done that. No other usb devices connected. I reinstalled Streets and Trips, but I already had one failure. Im going to go into my power save options and see if I may have something in there.

Jordan, it could be the GPS receiver itself. Could you test it with another laptop?

When I did the install in my car, I added an extension USB cable. A while back I posted that the USB extension cable was working fine. Now Im wondering???? Im going to try removing the extension cable and use the original short cable to see if this fixes the problem. Will keep everyone updated when I get to it. Thanks

Yes, that could be the problem. How long is the USB extension? You could add a powered USB hub to your setup to correct the issue, if you find that the extension is causing the problem.

Sorry for the delay in my response. Been away for a while. I shortened up the USB cable and all is fine. I believe I had about over 10 ft of usb cable. I had the original, plus a 6 ft extension. I ended up using the 6 ft ext I purchased separately, instead of the 3 ft that came with Streets and Trips.

Jordan, that's excellent. I'm glad it was so simple to correct the issue.
