How to convert a 'Place' to a Pushpin in Microsoft Streets and Trips?

1. Is there a way to easily convert a "place" to a pushpin in Microsoft Streets and Trips? Ie. I search for nearby places, find some I want to save?

2. Is there a way to convert a few hundred saved Garmin 60csx waypoints into pushpins for use in street and trips?

3. Is there a category in places for Fire Stations? I am trying to find all Los Angeles County Fire Stations, and Los Angeles (City) Fire Stations.

Yes, type (or paste) the complete address into the search box and click-click.

If you can convert these to a spreadsheet or list, yes. Import data from the created spreadsheet.

Yes, get one of the schmucks on this Forum to do it for you (see attachment).

Or do it the hard way: go to LAFD website where they lists their fire stations (LAFD - Neighborhood Fire Stations); copy the list; paste it into a spreadsheet; save the spreadsheet; close the spreadsheet; open Streets and Trips 2010; go to Data, Import and follow the directions. You may have to refine it a little as the LAFD list does not have zip codes and some of the matches may require manual intervention.

Good luck.

If you are using Mapsource with your 60Csx you can transfer the waypoints from the handheld to Mapsource and then Save As a GPX file. Then you can import the GPX file with the waypoints into Streets&Trips and they will show up as pushpins.

...ken...

So, I wonder why Fire Stations (at least Los Angeles ones) arent already included in Streets and Trips places?

Maybe add it to the Streets & Trips Wishlist for future enhancement.

... people asked for post offices and pharmacies in the S&T Wish List last year, and Microsoft added both categories to the new Streets & Trips 2010. Ask and you shell receive.

I'm not sure if Fire Stations POIs are available through Navteq, the map data provider for Streets & Trips, and I guess it would also depend on the program developer believing this new category would be useful to a wider audience, but asking doesn't hurt.

Hi Superduty,

Although S&T comes with 1.7 million points of interest built in - it will never be able to keep up with the demand for various POI categories.

The good news is you can download almost any POI collection you can think of (for free) and import them into your S&T software.

I did a quick search for Fire Stations in Los Angeles and found that POI-Factory.com had a file called LA City Fire Stations which contained all 104 stations.

I choose the Garmin CSV file and used the Import Data Wizard in S&T to import the file then gave it a custom icon. See pic below:

Ah, yes, but the LAFD website has 113.

Dang it! :-)

Actually, each location is numbered but a bunch of Fire Stations have closed down and so you can't count the ones that no longer exist.

Superduty...back me up here.

Well, that would certainly be consistent with the modern trend. I noticed there was no Number 113 but I put that down to superstition.

Yeah, they have closed stations and not replaced them or not reused the station number. Look for 22, or 30-32.

Pretty cool how the import function works.
