It was a separate program because originally Autoroute for the UK and Europe were developed in England decades ago -- I remember buying it on 2 floppy disks or something like that. I had contact with the developers from time to time and they were a nice bunch.
Then Microsoft did a Remington and bought the company. One or more of them moved to Redmond but I don't know if he is still there or not.
Sad to see it go. I better buy the latest while I can.

Re: Microsoft Streets and Trips 2009 will speak street names
Autoroute began life two decades ago. Note the copyright dates when you do Help-About.
Nextbase was purchased in 1994 ( New York Times article). Until about three years ago, it was Microsoft policy to consolidate all development in Redmond. (Exceptions were made during the dot-com bubble for Hotmail and other Silicon Valley firms.)

Yes, that's my "decades" -- I came online in the late '80's

Re: Microsoft Streets and Trips 2009 will speak street names
I sure hope that S&T 2009 gets the "left and rights" turns fixed. I'm tired of 2008 tring to run me into a concret interstate center divider when I need to exit right.

Re: Microsoft Streets and Trips 2009 will speak street names
Great catch, Keith, thanks! Beside the two highlighted items, there are two other useful new features: Automatically start GPS when application starts. It would be nice, perhaps in future versions, to let users select which specific GPS features they want enabled when application starts. But we will have to put our hands on Streets and Trips 2009 - perhaps even this version allows for this. We shell see when S&T 09 hits the store shelves.
Temporary disable Windows screen saver while GPS is running, is a useful feature, too.
(I'm very glad I can get rid of bunch of features from the next version of S&T Keys, )

Re: Microsoft Streets and Trips 2009 will speak street names
Find Money Saving Coupons Easily in Streets & Trips 2009 - S&T Team posted more details, including a screenshot, of the new feature that lets users not just search for nearby restaurants, hotels, special events, etc, but simultaneously search for special discounts in these establishments. The map at the included screenshot depicts downtown Toronto, to show this service is not limited to the USA, but is is available also up here in Canada. I will definitely give this new feature a try. A question that comes to mind now: What are the limitations of the free trial of the Entertainment Online coupons? Is there a time limit, $$$ limit, etc?
I spent a while looking at the various new buttons on the screenshot. I like the much larger size. They will be easier to use perhaps even on a touchscreen. However, I don't see the Connected Services button. It makes me wonder if the feature that was introduced a year ago will still be included in the new Streets and Trips 2009.

Re: Microsoft Streets and Trips 2009 will speak street names
A bit more details about the functionality of the upcoming Microsoft Streets and Trips 2009 can be found by reading the newly posted review of Microsoft MapPoint 2009. MS Streets & Trips is a sub-set of MS MapPoint.
The differences between MapPoint and Streets & Trips include the following:
MP is programmable (S&T isn't).
MP contains statistical data useful for businesses (S&T doesn't)
MP is around $300 (S&T is about $30)
MP releases new versions about once every couple of years (S&T comes out annually)
Other than the above, MapPoint and Streets & Trips are mostly identical. They share the same user interface, and if you've never seen MapPoint in your life, you would think it is Streets & Trips if you saw it.
MapPoint 2009 is already in stores. We can now see what Streets & Trips 2009 will look like when it releases in September.

Re: Microsoft Streets and Trips 2009 will speak street names
Hy everyone,
I'm a truck driver and I'm a very heavy user of S&T . I say that because I'm using S&T around 25 days a month 14 hrs/day (i think I'm a real heavy user).
I was so happy reading here that the 2009 version will have the automatic rerouting feature removable. Really happy because i am still with 2007 version , me and a lot of my friends truckers.
I'm also very curious to find out if the map itself was updated because there are a lot of places in North America(and believe me , i know what I'm talking here) where the reality is not corresponding with the map. For example : in Salt Lake City there are only few exits numbers on the map who are corresponding with the real number marked on the exit; in Edmonton , the city is growing unbelievable and four lanes highway are inexistent on the S&T map; in Dallas (Texas) are wrong exit numbers. And this are just few. I will not start talking about hundred of streets in a lot of Canadian cities who are marked as "range road X" and "range road Y".
Also i am very curious to see if on the night mode the color's will be choses with more imagination(on night mode i cannot see where the road is starting and where is ending.
There are more of my curiosities but me and a lot of my friend will be happy to see the automatic rerouting nightmare removable.
Anyway, step by step hopefully we will find out that the Microsoft team will be aware that around 50%(and growing) of the truck drivers have laptop in they're trucks and they are using S&T like hell, and probably will see the 2010 version with POI like truck stops , scales and Wall mart Super-centers like mandatory POI. And again : i know what I'm talking here. Because (don't forget) : "without trucks North America stops"
All the good wishes for all the GPS laptop users.

Re: Microsoft Streets and Trips 2009 will speak street names
Having just read through the thread, I don't think I saw anything that specifically pertained to S&T Connected Services.
<> Will this variant of S&T continue to be available?
<> More importantly, if so, will S&T 2009 interact with the TMC feed when it routes / reroutes? Showing traffic data without using it to route makes S&T 2008 Connected Services a truly crippled product...
