Re: Microsoft Streets and Trips 2009 will speak street names
Marvin: Thanks for the link; for whatever reason, I didn't see it when I scanned the forum.
I agree that this news is disappointing, especially considering that I subscribed to long-term MSN service because I assumed, in part, that MS would continue to support this product (and correct its shortcomings)...

Re: Microsoft Streets and Trips 2009 will speak street names
Hi Moose Master! Question for you:
I've been surprised to learn on this board how many truckers are using Streets and Trips. I'm curious - how are you handling truck prohibited roads - do you cross- reference your Streets and Trips route with a trucking atlas?
Thanks in advance for getting back to me!

And again : i know what I'm talking here. Because (don't forget) : "without trucks North America stops"
All the good wishes for all the GPS laptop users.

Hi Moose Master, 2010 is here today. Checkout Truck Stops Plus. We sell an add on template for Microsoft Streets & Trips that contains more than 7250 trucking specific points of interests including Truck Stops, Truck Stops w/scales, Wal-Mart Supercenters, Rest Areas, Turnpike Service Plazas, Picnic/Parking Areas, and Weigh Stations. The add on template also gives you the ability to check for Restricted Routes and Low Clearances right from the convenience of your laptop display, and you can use the Find Nearby Places Feature to find every trucking specific point of interest within a 50 mile radius of your present location or a location you anticipate being at. Hence, finding, locating, and routing to Truck Stops, Wal-Mart Supercenters, or other trucking specific points of interests has never been faster or easier. If you like using Microsoft Streets & Trips, you’ll love using the Truck Stops Plus add on template. You’ll never use a truck stop guide or Motor Carrier Road Atlas again!

No chickens there, bikerjoe, but if you, or anyone else interested, there have been some screenshots posted, along with a bit of info about the Brian's template: Truck Stops Plus

Re: Microsoft Streets and Trips 2009 will speak street names
Larry (from Microsoft),
Thanks for answer and yes is true : i travel A LOT with my truck and if you want i can let you know every time when i find a "bug" on S&T. There is no state(in USA) or province(in Canada) without me to skipped it. I'm almost the whole month on the road and at every few minutes I'm looking on the right where my laptop stands. (btw : i just bought a new laptop stand who is not shaking like the old one). And 30 minutes a go i just entered from Canada in USA at Sumas(WA) where the US-9 is positioned wrong on S&T map(yes i know is a 2007 version) and there are a lot of other discrepancies between reality and map. As i promise i can't wait for 2009 version to use it.
Thank you Larry for suggestions of adding TA, Wallmart etc on my map, but if i will show you my map and my POI you will freak out. I have worked a lot but was worth it. Is still not completed but I'm better that 99% of truck drivers that are using daily S&T.
For "My Point Exactly" : prohibited routes and low bridges is a very sensitive subject for a truck driver. When "my nose" is smelling smth mentioned above i use my common sense, my experience and the atlas for truckers. Some times it happen to get into some stupid situations but ....when is happen is just happen. Is better to do your trip in advance and not to just listen what the computer is saying.
Brian R : thank you for ideas. If you say that on that site i will find such things i swear i will check it right away. Let me get more info about what you suggested and I'll be back to you.
And now for everybody : I've built in years a S&T map full of informations valuable for the truck drivers and not only. I do have there Wallmart Supercenters, TA, Loves, Pilot, Flying J, Petro, Scales, Low bridges(few), Rest Areas, "no name" truck stops, places for overnight parking etc all over USA and (the most precious) Canada. If the site admin will aloud i can post it here for everybody interessed.
All the best for everybody and drive safe,
Moose

Yes, please do so. Just start a new thread/topic, and in the "Advanced" you will see the option to attach a file. If you have any problem with it, let me know. If there is a file size limit you run into, I can increase the file size. I'm not sure if there is a restriction on which type of files can be uploaded, but I can change that, too.

Re: Microsoft Streets and Trips 2009 will speak street names
I find the picture interesting. The Amazon photo shows what appears to be a new type of a USB GPS receiver, but a picture at S&T Team blog shows a new Streets & Trips 2009 box with what looks like the GPS-500 USB GPS receiver that was also included in S&T 2008 and S&T 2007:

Re: Microsoft Streets and Trips 2009 will speak street names
The one that was introduced in the fall of 2004, when Streets & Trips 2005 released? If the just released MapPoint 2009 is any indication, then the upcoming Streets & Trips 2009 will be the same in this respect as S&T 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 . We may as well get used to it.
Why was the (+) and (-) 15% slider idea ever introduced, instead of the previously good system where users could just enter exact speed? I don't know. My guess is that it could have something to do with the fact that there are different speed limits in different jurisdictions, but this is just my wild guess, and likely I'm incorrect. But it seems there are still people who after all these years remember, and dearly miss, the old way of doing things. It did allow more user control...

Ok, so I've done a quick scan and can't see anything definative on AUTOROUTE. Can the Microsoft guys/girls advise the future of it? Will there be anew release or is it dead.

So now it is $75.00 ??? WITHOUT the antenna?
I need to know if Microsoft has dropped their paranoia about multiple installations. I am self-employed and the sole proprietor of my business. In other words, I am a One-Man-Show. I run a towing service and have several computers dispersed among several locations, both towers and laptops. When a call comes for a tow, I want to stop what I am doing on WHATEVER computer I am using at that moment, at whatever LOCATION I am at that moment, pull up the map, and quote the tow. It is already a real annoyance to have to keep at least TWO computers booted up at all times, because only one of my work computers at a location has S&T 2008 installed.
Solution: Microsoft should sell their software for whatever, apparently it is now $75.00. I'm okay with that price. Make it good for ONE installation, with your online registration process.
Once that serial number is registered to me, and I have validated my identity using some Net based I.D. check process, I would be willing to pay an additional $10.00 to $15.00 for each additional installation of the SAME software, using the online registration process.
So when I put 2009 on my computers, and I decide I need it on SEVEN units, the total cost would be $75 + (6 x $10) = $135.00, or $75 + (6 x $15)= $165.00 to have MY copy of MY program that I paid for available on ALL of MY computers. I think that is more than reasonable, since MS doesn't need to burn another copy of the CD, package it, ship it and create a serial number for it.
The 2008 version limited the purchaser to TWO installations, which was ridiculous. It is predicated on the notion that a person only has ONE, or maybe TWO computers that he or she uses for their own personal use. Hey Microsoft! Many People own MORE than two computers. This is because your more famous product, , CRASHES without warning.
It does me NO good to have S&T on ONE office computer. If that computer goes down for any reason, SO DOES MY ACCESS TO S&T. If I am in my truck and my PC bursts into flames as I spill a coke over the case, it does me NO good to lose my access to S&T, so I need it on my truck's backup laptop as well. If I am at my remote office and the PC with S&T was stolen in a burglary the previous night, I need it on the backup laptop stored in the safe as well. If S&T is aimed at business, Ding! Ding! Ding! Many BUSINESSES have more than TWO computers!
I had to buy two copies of S&T 2008 in order to get the program I purchased onto four computers, one tower at my office, another on a tower at a remote location I use as a backup dispatch, my truck PC and the truck's backup laptop. Paying for TWO copies stung a little, but at $30-something per copy, I was willing to buy TWO, even though I needed FOUR.
NOW if the price is $75.00, and that two-computer limit still applies, I may buy only one copy and rely on your competitor's programs for my daily mapping needs, or maybe I'll just avoid S&T all together.
I understand that Microsoft doesn't want me to buy one copy and run to Korea to churn out millions of cheap pirated copies, but GEEZ, LOUISE! I can't justify spending $300.00 for four two-copy-limit CDs!!!
