Re: Streets and Trips 2009 licensing initialization error

You may have already done this, but at this point here's what I would do:

Use Add/Remove Programs (or the Vista equivalent, if applicable) to remove anything S&T from your computer.

Restart

Use something like the registry cleaner in ioBit's Advanced Windows Care (free version) to make sure the registry is cleaned out.

Restart

Install S&T 2009.

Obviously you want to backup any data you care to save from S&T 2008.

Re: Streets and Trips 2009 licensing initialization error

Thanks Ken for the effort but I did exactly what you said and no luck.....It loads fine until the very end it says "A licensing intialization error has occured...Please contact Customer support for more assistance. Error 0xC004D301" then after you click ok on the error it says, Thanks for installing Microsoft Streets & Trips 2009 and then you click okay and it closes. I even the put the shortcut icon and when you double click it comes up with that error.....Any other ideas? Thanks again for the help!

Pete, thanks very much for the excellent news . Did the person say if the fix will be in the form of a publicly available download file, or will the affected customers need to go through the telephone tech support?

Marvin, I couldn't get that info out of him. When I asked, he would only say he would call me on Tuesday. I'll let everyone know what happens.

For those with this licencing error.. I just got a call from MS support. The patch will be available tomorrow or maybe Wed. I will need to be run by MS support, it won't be a user patch. I'll keep you posted.

Update on the patch......I was told the patch that was to be made available on Tuesday failed to correct the problem in pre-release testing. Microsoft tech support anticipates the patch will be available by Friday.

UPDATE.....A Microsoft technician called me this afternoon to tell me the patch was ready to download and install. Through the use of Easy Assist, the tech installed the patch and now S&T 2009 is finally running. Great tech support Microsoft!

Microsoft support called me today with a patch. Using Easy Assist, the patch was called ResetTool-10-24.zip. If you can somehow find that tool you could fix the problem without their help. The patch worked.

Hi RickCanada,

to Laptop GPS World.

Thanks for the good news.

It's best to make the phone call to Microsoft Technical Support, to get this issue corrected. It's really the only legal way, too, since MSFT has not released the tool to the public.

Re: Streets and Trips 2009 licensing initialization error

Why is it that every time there's a problem the patch name is always "reset" something?

Let's all call microsoft and ask them for the reset patch. If they say they don't know what the heck you're talking about, yell at them.

Re: Streets and Trips 2009 licensing initialization error

I have a feeling that this problem has to do with a previously installed version, probably 08. They said that the program wouldn't work unless they deleted the patch. I don't believe them. What I really think is that this patch will prevent people who has a pirated version not to be able to use it as you can't run it without the software support.

Re: Streets and Trips 2009 licensing initialization error

I just had MS run the patch and 2009 now works fine. I do have to say that MS support was excellent. They called me 2 times to fix the problem, but I wasn't able to get at my computer either time. I was truly impressed with the support on this issue.

Not that I knew anything new, I suspect that your theory about a previously installed version was probably correct. Especially realizing the new activation scheme in S&T2009. I had S&T2006 which I do not believe had this. Anyway, I avoid this whole issue by having a Norton Ghost image of my laptop that is just of the underlying OS. Then when a new version comes out, I just backup my data files and then lay down the image on the drive; patch it current and install the new version. I also have Delorme on it and when I get a new version of either, I just lay down the image and then reinstall both applications. The new version of the application and the old version and/or the new version of both. About every six months i Image the laptop as is, lay down the OS only image and patch it current and re-image the OS only version that is patched current.

This is all a bit of overkill but I have tinkered with MS stuff since 1984 and the old days of just deleting the directory that held the application and having no issues are long gone.
