Converting my existing Master Copy with 5,000 to 7,000 pushpins to 2009 is going to be a real chore.
As I open a 2008 file in the trial version of 2009, it changed over most of my black pushpin icons over to the new fat red icons. I can live with that. But at the same time, for no apparent reason, it changed other black push pins into entirely different icons. Now I have solid color pushpins, red house pushpins, red text balloons, purple house icons etc. It even changed my 'Do Not Enter' pushpins that I placed on 2008 for roads the didn't go through or never existed in the first place, into all sorts of different icons. It appears when my new version comes in the mail, I will have to spend several hours converting thousands of pushpins into the correct style. On a side note, I am very disappointed in the 2009 version so far. Instead of changing the user interface and adding 'coupons' and other useless crap, I would have preferred that they included some of the 4 lane highways that have been on the ground for the past 4 or 5 years. They still don't have major roads drawn! In fact, I could not find a single road that was added, to replace the roads I drew myself while out in the field. After looking at the 2009 Trial version, which I should have done before paying for the full copy, I would have just kept using my 2008 version. The only bad thing about the 2008 version is that the stupid GPS keeps cutting out. I sure hope they fixed this problem in the 2009 version. |

Hi Texoma,
to Laptop GPS World. To avoid issues related to converting older files to newer version of Streets & Trips, it is better to keep pushpin data in a Microsoft Excel file. Any version will successfully import from Excel, and you will avoid some of the issues you've mentioned (and other potential issues, too).

Huh?
How would you go about doing that? You are not talking about having all your addresses on a spreasheet, and then just use the import feature are you? If so, that will not work for me. Over half of my pushpins never routed because they are route and box number type addresses. Is that what you were talking about? |

Yes, that's what I had in mind. Each year I hear a few people mention they experience various issues related to opening older version files in a new version program. Having your pushpin database in an Excel file would eliminate potential problems.
Instead of addresses, you could use latitude/longitude. I realize it could be a lot of work for you now to put everything into XL.

I don't know, but suspect, that more than one person other than Texoma has spent hours working to sort out issues trying to update older versions of .est files in newer editions. Whether your data is saved as an Excel file or in any of the other supported file formats, it is usable in any edition of Streets and more importantly in just about any other mapping or trip planning software. Where will you be if Streets goes the way of AutoRoute?

Streets and Trips going away has about the same odds as Flight Simulator going away. As long as it brings in the revenue, Streets and Trips will be around for years to come.

Importing data into Streets and Trips is easy. I also add items as I work in the field. What I need to do is be able to export my custom additions from Streets and Trips. That would allow me to create backup files of my data.
