Hi there,
I am new here and already have a question: My idea is to log a track on a gps receiver or on my laptop via USB GPS. Then I want to upload this track every minute via 3G directly on a homepage, where the track should be shown for example in Google MAps. Has anyone any idea, how I could manage the track logging, the frequently upload and the Homepage? Thanks in advance, Andi |

Hi Andi,
Welcome to the forum. ALK CoPilot Live Laptop offers tracking in real time. You drive, and someone else can see your location on a map over the Internet. It is secure, so unless a person has your invitation, they cannot see you. Here's a brief review of ALK CoPilot. There may be other options. Other users may offer their suggestions.

GpsGate is a simple answer, and the software on the pc allows you to split your GPS signal over many programs, such as Google Earth without needing the Pro edition.
I've been using their buddy system to find out where friends are, in a similar way to how you suggest, but they also provide an API to integrate their positions into users own websites |

I second the GPSGate suggestion for one reason: it does not tie you to any particular navigation program.

I 3rd using GPSGate. I also have a program called GooPS, which is an addon for Google Earth for the other users to see where I'm located.

I was wondering about how to go about this same issue, tracking and reporting GPS on the net.
One of the things I was looking at was Data Services from cell phone carriers, EVDO in particular, Mind you, in Canada the rates are sky high, with Telus $15 per megabyte and $100 unlimited. Though it is restricted to digital coverage areas only, this would potentially cover you for internet access on major routes. EVDO might be a bit much for reporting GPS on the net, but heck, you could even stream music from internet radio if you wanted. I'm thinking the other solutions require a wifi connection.... of course free wifi access points aren't everywhere! |

You can only do cell phone data access with EVDO only in Canada? I know here in the US, when I don't have an EVDO connection, I still have a data connection, albeit slower. But, it doesn't take much for transmitting the data.
I pay $50/month for unlimited data through Sprint, here. |

We've only got EVDO with two cellular carriers, but I'm not sure on the pricing of the data plans off the top of my head, they would probably suffice.
