Driving Speeds

The driving speeds section is my biggest pet peeve. I want it clearer what kinds of roads are what and what exactly slower/faster means. I'd prefer it be labeled in increments above and below the speed limit for the road. I know I drive the limit on small streets, 5 above on big streets, and 10 above on highways. But how do I tell S/T that??

Re: Driving Speeds

Welcome to the board.

This feature used to be present in older versions of Streets & Trips, but was removed about 3-4 years ago, probably at the behest of the lawyers. This was around the same time that real-time driving directions were added to the product, and the big warning dialog is also the result of the lawyers.

It is unlikely that this feature will ever be restored, unless and until it appears in competing programs. Unfortunately, we live in a litigious society, and companies have to do silly things to reduce the likelihood of litigation.

(Speaking of speed -- your GPS allows you to determine the bias in your car's speedometer. This deliberate error is also introduced for legal reasons.)

Re: Driving Speeds

You wouldn't happen to have a rough estimate what those indicators mean though would you :-p

Re: Driving Speeds

I seriously doubt the lack of driving speeds is a result of lawyers being involved. Why? Because Garmin's Mapsource products allow the users to manually enter your driving speeds on their PC wnen computing distance and travelling times.

However MapSource does not provide GPS navigation features any more.

And except for calling out street names (just says turn left in 200 metres) nRoute works along side/with Mapsource. What Garmin decides to call the app doesn't matter to me, just functionality.

Re: Driving Speeds

+1 on the need to optionally hard-code a speed into a route section.

The status quo is a deal-breaker for many of my compatriots in the long-distance rallying game. They need time precision when routebuilding. Some are still using Street Atlas for that reason.

Re: Driving Speeds

I have found that when I put the limited speed to the lowest setting it gives me 300 miles driven in 5 hours driving time. That is an average speed of 60MPH. If this is 15% lower than average then I guess the average driver is doing 70 MPH, and I only travel at 60 max.

Re: Driving Speeds

From my experience, the percentage are inaccurate percentages. That's the thing about statistics and percentages, it can be shaped many ways. Give me back the manual input values any day.

Re: Driving Speeds

But exactly what is "AVERAGE". It isn' the speed limit on the mapped highways or the average of the posted speed limit of the various roads you are running for that section of the trip. And it certainly does not take into account anything the corporate legal department has assigned from what I can tell.
