I agree, the new "Perspective Map" feature in Microsoft Streets and Trips 2008 seems to have been released before the programmers had a chance to finish the feature properly. The current implementation of the feature is not practical to use (I doubt anyone is using it). Let's hope the programmers will have enough time and resources to complete the job this time around.
Two things need to happen before people can use the new "Perspective Map" feature: 1. GPS location icon needs to be pinned to the bottom center of the map, and 2. users should be able to enable dynamic turn view (automatic zoom) as well, while the Perspective Map" is enabled.

Let's have a POLL so users can express how they like/dislike the implementaion of the "Perspective Map" feature in Microsoft Streets and Trips 2008.
The new Microsoft Streets & Trips 2008 introduced among other features even the long anticipated 3D-view (or "Perspective map" as Microsoft calls it). I have been very curious to find out if people use this new functionality. S&T has always allowed users to turn on just the features they need, and keep turned off the unneeded functions. Everyone uses S&T a bit differently. How about YOU? Do you use this new option? Only registered members may vote on this poll. Please register and let your voice be heard .

I have used an eXplorist for a number of years along with a couple versions of Streets and Trips. For me personally, the 3D doesn't give me the "big picture" view that I like to constantly see. I guess I've grown so comfortable with the 2D world that I don't need to see my map in "perspective". When I'm driving, I want to be able to glance over at the screen and have a general idea of what's ahead. The 3D only shows me what's immediately coming up. That's why I prefer 2D. I can see a lot farther ahead.

With the exception of automatic route recalculation I agree with "S&T has always allowed users to turn on just the features they need, and keep turned off the unneeded functions" It wouldn't be so bad but the feature is more like an automatic/random route destroyer. Recalculate. IE: hide the route and directions from the screen at the worst possible time.
I'm very disappointed in their 3D view also. After seeing it once I'm not even going to turn it on anymore. Its no matter because their 2D view works fine. I wish the avoid area boxes weren't so bright in night time mode. |

1. Hundreds of Streets & Trips users would agree with you about the needed ability for users to decide whether or not to turn on / turn off automatic rerouting
2. Let's hope the 3D will improve in Microsoft Streets and Trips 2009 3. You just inspired another item for our 'Tips & Tricks': If the 'Avoid Area' is too bright in Night Mode - change its color

Thanks Marvin
I figured out I could do that (after I had too many avoids) but I'm too "lazy" (I didn't even correct my pushpin icons after the upgrade changed most of them). Also the color doesn't go back to normal in day mode and I haven't found a color that I like for both modes. I suppose if they correct Streets and Trips in 2009 and it doesn't change my pushpin icons again I'll correct them, until then I don't want to bother redoing them every year. I only have hundreds, I can't imagine the frustration of having thousands to correct. |

Well I got to check out the "Perspective map view" today and I can say I'm not impressed. It's ok but it would be much better if they combined the Perspective view with the Dynamic turn view. In other words as you approach your next turn in your route, the map automatically zooms in to give a clearer view. So until this happens, I'm just going to stick with the 2D overhead view that I've become accustomed to.

I think that I stated this before but Microsoft Streets and Trips can benefit from a true 3D view not a Pseudo attempt at a 3D view. I don't know if any of you have used the defunct pocket map Navigator for PPC, but it had one of the best 3D map views that I have ever seen. I also agree with rasmith1959 "it would be much better if they combined the Perspective view with the Dynamic turn view. In other words as you approach your next turn in your route, the map automatically zooms in to give a clearer view."
